Hippos are semi-aquatic giants that spend their days submerged in rivers and lakes, conserving energy and staying cool, and their nights grazing on land.
They live in groups called pods, and while they’re territorial and can be aggressive, they also show signs of cooperation and social bonding.
Mothers are especially protective of their calves, and hippos communicate with a range of grunts, bellows, and honks that carry through the water.
Hippos are also ecosystem engineers—their grazing shapes the landscape, and their dung fertilizes rivers, supporting fish populations and aquatic plants.
They’re powerful, dangerous, and absolutely essential.
You can hold boundaries and still contribute to the world. You can be fierce and still nurture.
