Animal Behavior: Earthworm

Chris Gamache — Fri, 06 Nov 2026 15:13:09 GMT

Earthworms are quiet, hidden, and absolutely essential. They tunnel through the soil, letting air and water reach deeper, and they turn dead leaves into rich castings that feed the plants above them.

Without earthworms, soil would pack down hard and plants would struggle.

They're humble and almost never noticed, and they do the kind of work that makes everything else possible. The most important work is often invisible. It still holds the world together.

You don't need recognition to matter.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Iguana

Chris Gamache — Thu, 05 Nov 2026 15:15:34 GMT

Iguanas may look like they're just basking in the sun, but they handle their social lives with clear boundaries. Males claim territory through displays like head bobs and extending the flap of skin under their chin, a posture that says, "This is my space." Most disputes end without a fight.

Young iguanas often stay together after hatching, finding safety in numbers while they learn their world.

You don't have to be loud to be seen. You don't have to fight every battle to protect what's yours.

There's power in stillness: knowing your boundaries, stating them clearly, and letting that be enough.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Moose

Chris Gamache — Wed, 04 Nov 2026 18:23:30 GMT

Here's a fact I tell everyone, because it blows my mind: orcas are a natural predator of moose. And yes, I looked it up. There are documented cases of orcas hunting and killing moose.

Moose are solitary for most of the year, wandering forests and wetlands and browsing on water plants and tree bark. But mothers are fiercely protective, charging at anything that comes too close to their calves, even bears and wolves.

They're massive, powerful, and surprisingly good swimmers, able to dive close to twenty feet to reach the plants at the bottom of a lake.

Moose are proof that you can be solitary and still deeply connected to the world around you. Independence doesn't mean isolation.

Stay wild,

Chris

Was I being too sensitive, or was I just paying attention to what others wanted to ignore?

Dee Baker — Tue, 03 Nov 2026 05:16:13 GMT

It was a Saturday night in the Winter.

Despite running a business and working FT, I took the night “off” to go to a birthday dinner… then its after-party at a pub, and then the house party after that.

I almost didn’t go... I was exhausted and it was a whole town away, with people I wasn’t even sure wanted me there, but the birthday girl did... So there…

Animal Behavior: California Condor

Chris Gamache — Sun, 01 Nov 2026 17:47:30 GMT

California condors are the largest land birds in North America, with wings stretching nearly ten feet across. They can soar for hours without flapping, riding warm air like the world's largest, most serious kite.

By 1982, only twenty-two condors were left in the entire world. Every remaining wild bird was eventually captured to try to save the species, and for a few years there were no condors in the wild at all.

Then, slowly, carefully, people bred them and released them again. Today there are more than five hundred, with hundreds flying free.

When you've lost almost everything, it can feel like the story is over. It isn't. Recovery can be slow, and it still counts.

Being down to almost nothing isn't the end of your story.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Fainting Goat

Chris Gamache — Fri, 30 Oct 2026 16:34:43 GMT

Fainting goats don't actually faint.

They have a genetic condition called myotonia congenita, and when they're startled, their muscles lock up for about ten seconds. Sometimes they stiffen in place, and sometimes they tip right over. Through it all, they're fully awake and aware, and it doesn't hurt them.

As they get older, many of them learn to brace their legs or lean against something when they feel it coming, so they don't fall.

A lot of us know what it's like to freeze when we're overwhelmed. It can feel embarrassing or like a failure. But freezing is one of the ways a body tries to protect you. You can learn to work with it, and you can always get back up.

Freezing isn't failing. Your body is doing its best to protect you.

Animal Behavior: Black-Tailed Antechinus

Chris Gamache — Thu, 29 Oct 2026 18:45:12 GMT

Black-tailed antechinuses are tiny carnivorous marsupials that weren't even known to science until 2014, hidden in the cool, misty forests of the eastern Australian highlands.

They're endangered now, and their lives come with a hard truth.

During their short breeding season, males throw everything they have into it, barely eating or sleeping, until stress hormones flood their bodies and shut down their immune systems. Most of them die within weeks. The females often survive to raise another generation.

Burnout can feel like the only proof that you tried hard enough. But your worth was never measured in how much of yourself you could use up. You're allowed to pace yourself and still be here next season.

You don't have to burn yourself out to prove you were worth something.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Eastern Cottontail

Chris Gamache — Tue, 27 Oct 2026 18:09:57 GMT

Eastern cottontails build shallow nests hidden in the grass, lined with their own fur.

And then the mother rabbit does something that confuses a lot of people: she leaves. She only comes back to feed her babies about twice a day, at dawn and dusk, staying away the rest of the time so she won't lead predators straight to her nest.

People often find the babies alone and think they've been abandoned, but she's been watching and returning all along.

When you're alone, it can feel like everyone has forgotten you. But quiet seasons don't always mean you've been left behind. Sometimes care is happening just out of sight.

Quiet doesn't mean forgotten. Someone is coming back for you.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Red-Crowned Crane

Chris Gamache — Sun, 25 Oct 2026 17:04:00 GMT

Red-crowned cranes mate for life, and they keep their bond strong by dancing. Pairs bow, leap, and call to each other in synchronized movements.

Both parents share the work of raising chicks, taking turns incubating eggs and defending the nest. Young cranes stay with their parents for nearly a year, learning the migration routes.

In flight, they call to each other across the sky, a constant reassurance: I'm here, we're together.

Love isn't just a feeling. It's a practice. It's the choice to stay, to dance, to call out so the other knows they're not alone.

Love is the practice of saying, through every season: I'm here, we're together, you're not flying alone.

Chris

Animal Behavior: Wallaby

Chris Gamache — Sat, 24 Oct 2026 16:26:06 GMT

Wallabies are smaller cousins of kangaroos, and like them, they're social, gentle grazers who live in loose groups called mobs.

They communicate with soft clucking sounds and thump their feet to warn each other of danger.

Mothers are incredibly devoted, carrying their joeys in their pouches for months and continuing to nurse and protect them even after they've hopped out.

They're not territorial or aggressive with one another. They simply share space, share warnings, and move through the world with quiet awareness.

There's strength in gentleness. You don't have to be the loudest or the largest to contribute, to protect, to belong.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Shetland Pony

Chris Gamache — Wed, 21 Oct 2026 16:52:14 GMT

Shetland ponies come from the windswept islands north of Scotland, where winters are brutal and food is scarce. To survive there, they grew thick double coats and sturdy little bodies.

For their size, they're among the strongest horses in the world.

In the 1800s, after an 1842 law banned women and young children from working underground in Britain's coal mines, thousands of Shetlands were sent down into the dark as pit ponies, hauling heavy carts through tunnels too small for bigger horses.

People look at a Shetland and see something small and cute. They don't see how much it has carried.

You may have been underestimated your whole life, but look at everything you've carried anyway. That strength was always there.

Chris

Animal Behavior: Black Eyed Tree Frog

Chris Gamache — Tue, 20 Oct 2026 20:21:49 GMT

Black-eyed tree frogs, also called Morelet's tree frogs, live in the forests of southern Mexico and Central America. They're close cousins of the famous red-eyed tree frog, but with deep, dark eyes.

When it's time to lay eggs, the females choose leaves and rocks hanging right over the water.

The eggs develop safely above the surface, and when the tadpoles hatch, they simply let go and drop into the pond below, exactly where they need to be to grow.

These frogs have been hit hard by habitat loss and a deadly fungus, and they've vanished from parts of their range.

Sometimes life asks you to let go of what feels safe and familiar. The drop is terrifying. But sometimes that fall lands you exactly where you're meant to grow.

The fall that scares you might be the landing you were meant for.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Harbor Seal

Chris Gamache — Sat, 17 Oct 2026 16:06:36 GMT

Harbor seals are some of the shyest marine mammals.

They haul out on beaches and rocks together, but they keep a careful distance from each other, and at the first sign of something unfamiliar, they slip quietly back into the sea.

Their pups can swim within hours of being born, and mothers find their babies in the crowd by the sound of their voices.

In the water, they sometimes rest floating upright with just their noses above the surface. It's called bottling.

You can love your people and still need room to breathe. Wanting personal space doesn't make you cold or distant. It's how some of us stay comfortable enough to keep showing up.

You can belong to the group and still need your own space.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Hedgehog

Chris Gamache — Fri, 16 Oct 2026 17:27:04 GMT

Hedgehogs carry somewhere between five and seven thousand spines, and they never use them to attack.

When something frightens them, they tuck in their face and feet and roll into a tight ball, letting the spines face the world while the soft parts stay safe inside.

They're quiet, solitary night wanderers who mostly want to be left alone to forage.

And sometimes, when they meet a new smell, they do something strange: they chew it, foam at the mouth, and smear the froth across their spines. Scientists still aren't sure why.

Not everything about you has to be explained to be valid. Curling inward when the world feels sharp isn't weakness. It's what kept you alive long enough to uncurl again.

Curling up to protect yourself was never failure. It's how you made it through.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Porcupine

Chris Gamache — Thu, 15 Oct 2026 17:30:16 GMT

Porcupines are covered in thousands of quills, modified hairs that detach and lodge in predators, with backward-facing barbs that make them painful to remove.

But they're not aggressive. They'd much rather climb a tree and eat bark, leaves, and twigs in peace.

They're mostly solitary, though mothers care for their young for months, and in winter several porcupines may den together for warmth.

They're surprisingly vocal, with grunts, whines, and chattering sounds. They waddle more than walk, slow and deliberate, trusting their defenses.

You don't need to be fast or social to survive. Defense is not aggression. You can be prickly and still need warmth.

Boundaries are not aggression. They are your safety.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Seahorse

Chris Gamache — Wed, 14 Oct 2026 15:00:33 GMT

Seahorses defy convention in beautiful ways. Males carry the young, their bodies swelling as they incubate eggs in a special pouch.

Many bonded pairs meet every morning for a greeting dance, changing colors and twining their tails together, a ritual that reaffirms their bond.

They're not built for speed or aggression. They drift through seagrass meadows and anchor themselves with their tails, finding safety in stillness.

Seahorses remind us that caregiving isn't gendered, that strength takes many forms, and that commitment is something you choose every single day.

You don't need speed or aggression to matter. Strength can look like holding steady.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Raven

Chris Gamache — Mon, 12 Oct 2026 16:38:18 GMT

Ravens are among the most intelligent birds on Earth, capable of planning, problem-solving, and even holding grudges. But what’s most striking is their social intelligence.

Ravens mate for life, and pairs engage in aerial acrobatics together—not for survival, but for joy.

They play, they cooperate, and they’ve been observed sharing food with non-relatives, especially when others are in need.

Young ravens form gangs, learning from each other and testing boundaries before they pair off.

Ravens remember faces—both human and avian—and they communicate about threats across large distances.

They’ve been seen working with wolves, leading them to carcasses and benefiting from the wolves’ ability to tear open tough hides.

Cooperation isn’t just within species; it’s about recognizing when collaboration serves everyone.

Intelligence without empathy is empty. But intelligence paired with care can change ecosystems.

Chris

Animal Behavior: Monarch Butterfly

Chris Gamache — Sun, 11 Oct 2026 17:35:41 GMT

Monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles, yet no single butterfly completes the journey. It takes four generations: the first three live only weeks, reproducing and passing the route forward, while the fourth—born in late summer—lives for months and makes the full migration south.

They’ve never been to the destination, yet they know the way, guided by instinct and the genetic memory of those who came before them.

When they arrive in Mexico, millions cluster together in oyamel forests, covering trees in a blanket of orange wings.

It’s not about individual glory. It’s about the continuation of something bigger.

The work you do today becomes the foundation for someone else’s journey tomorrow. You may not see the end, but your effort ensures others will arrive.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Gray Wolf

Chris Gamache — Wed, 07 Oct 2026 17:59:50 GMT

Gray wolves live in packs built on family—parents, siblings, offspring from previous years—and their survival depends on cooperation.

They hunt together, taking down prey much larger than themselves through strategy and endurance.

The entire pack helps raise the pups, bringing them food, teaching them to hunt, playing with them to build strength and coordination.

Leadership isn’t tyranny; it’s often the breeding pair making decisions, but the pack is a democracy of effort, every wolf contributing.

When a wolf howls, others answer, their voices layering into harmonies that reinforce their bond.

They remind us that family is built through shared work. Leadership is service. Your voice matters most when it’s joining others, not drowning them out.

Stay wild,

Chris

Animal Behavior: Great White Shark

Chris Gamache — Tue, 06 Oct 2026 15:24:15 GMT

Great white sharks are often cast as villains, but they’re really just survivors—ancient, efficient, and deeply misunderstood.

They travel vast distances alone, some migrating thousands of miles across open ocean, following invisible maps written in temperature and scent.

Despite their solitary nature, they’re not mindlessly aggressive—they’re cautious, intelligent, often investigating with a test bite rather than attacking outright.

Mothers carry their young for over a year, giving birth to live pups that emerge fully formed and ready to hunt, receiving no parental care but equipped with everything they need.

They maintain balance in ocean ecosystems, removing the sick and weak, keeping populations healthy.

They are proof that being feared doesn’t mean being understood. You can be powerful and misunderstood and still essential.

Your presence matters, even when others don’t see your full story.

Stay wild,

Chris
